Over the years, Wigan Heritage Services has built up an archive of photographic images dating from the late 1800s to the present day. The images cover the Borough of Wigan and surrounding areas. We hope you enjoy discovering your Borough.
How to search the archive
Using the 'Search' tool on the left hand side:
Type your keywords into the box
Select the place from the drop-down menu (if required)
Then, click on 'Search Archive'
A gallery of the results will appear
Click on an image to see its description and purchase details
Keywords can be anything- place, event, object, person, year
Use a combination of keywords to refine your search
If a keyword does not find what you are looking for, try alternatives, for example 'colliery' or 'mine' instead of 'coal'
If you know more about the image than we do or spot any errors, click Contact us and let us know. Remember to quote the PC number- example PC2009.1.
This site was made possible thanks to the Heritage Lottery Fund and Wigan Heritage Service volunteers.
New images have been added from our extensive historic postcard collection. These images are from the Wigan collection - although we are now working on digitising the postcard images from the rest of the Wigan Borough - and they cover the period from the late nineteenth century to the mid twentieth century. They show local scenes, places of historic interest and often include humorous captions about the Wigan area.
To see the entire collection, search for "PCC" in the Keyword box.
